It is quickly becoming time to help your Fruit Trees get the best start to 2007 they can! Yes it is time for Dormant Oil.
Dormant Oil Spray Kits are a combination of two ingredients. Lime Sulfur and Horticultural Oil. These two ingredients combine to take care of many of the common insect and fungal problems that Fruit Trees are subsceptible too. So how does it work? First, you need to spray your trees on a frost free day in early spring before the buds have started to open (any time before the middle of April usually). Soak the tree thoroughly in the morning preferably, which allows the tree to dry during the day and prevents the solution from freezing on the tree overnight.
The Horticultural Oil works by coating the tree and any insects and their eggs that are sitting on the bark and suffocates them. The Lime Sulfur kills any fungal bacteria that may be on the branches or the main stem of your tree.
The Dormant Oil application is not a fool proof way to ensure you will not have pest problems with your Fruit Trees but it will certainly minimize your work later on this season.
