I like to compare crabgrass to a pair of dress shoes that just don’t fit. You only notice or remember when it’s too late (and your dying to take them off at the event but can’t!). Unfortunately crabgrass can only be controlled at certain times of the year. Well now is your chance!
Although you may not see the crabgrass that was at the edge of your driveway or along the sidewalk in front of your house, the seeds are sitting where they were existent last year waiting to germinate. Here are your two options, other than spending the summer on your hands and knees pulling weeds.
One, apply lawn fertilizer that has crabgrass control in it to prevent the seed from germinating altogether. You must remember that if you decide to control your crabgrass you cannot reseed or seed your lawn at the same time. This method helps give your lawn a boost and prevents the crabgrass from germinating in the following weeks and months.
The second option that you can use is Turf Maize. This is an organic control that consists mostly of Corn Gluten. This acts as a weed seed preventer at the critical stage (RIGHT NOW). Applying the turf maize with a broadcast spreader helps ensure proper rate of application.
Both Turf Maize and Lawn Fertilizer with Crabgrass Control are available at the Nursery.
Keep in mind that products such as WeedOut and other herbicides cannot rid you of the problem once it appears in the summer as they are only effective in eliminating broad leaf plants. Only products such as WipeOut kill crabgrass, but it also kills the grass in the area applied as well. So before the next wedding or fancy dinner get rid of those shoes and feel good about your feet and your lawn.
