1) Now is the ideal time to prune Pine and Spruce plants. Pinch or snip the new growth as required to achieve a desired shape and improve foliage density. Do not cut into old wood, unless it is to cut out damaged branches. Cedars can be pruned any time during the growing season but avoid being overly vigorous.
2) Prune spring flowering shrubs such as Lilac and Sandcherry to promote fuller growth, and maintain a controlled form. Again, avoid cutting into old wood unless it is to remove damaged branches.
3) Cut your grass! The ideal mowing height is 3 inches. The height of the grass blades determines the depth of the root system. The higher the grass is cut, the deeper the root system. Deeper rooted lawns are better able to reach moisture and nutrients during summer heat and drought.
4) To eradicate Ant populations, mix one part baking soda with one part icing sugar and sprinkle along trails, or place in small amounts where they travel.
5) Annunals looking tired? Fertilize hanging baskets and planters every 10-14 days with water soluable plant food. Usually these plants are grown in close quarters, with limited soil. So to ensure they stay healthy and robust, fertilize and keep up the watering!
6) Roses should be deadheaded as their first flush of bloom is coming to an end. To encourage a second wave of strong blooms, roses greatly appreciate a watering with epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) - found at your local pharmacy. Dilute 2 tbsp in a standard watering can.
7) Realize your problem areas! Landscape fabric with mulch or decorative stones will help reduce weeding at this time next year in troublesome spots.
8) To increase or create your privacy screen, large shrubs with colourful foliage add a new dynamic to your property.
9) Watering should be done in the morning or evening - avoid watering in the mid-afternoon sun! At this time of day, most of the moisture is lost to evaporation, leaving little for your plants. If you water during cooler times of day, it allows the plants time to fully absorb the moisture. Make sure you water only around the base of your plants, and NOT on their leaves! Water on the leaves acts as a magnifying glass through which the sun will burn and leave brown spots.
10) Enjoy the fruits of your labour! Make a personally unique cut-flower bouquet; make a gourmet meal with freshly harvested herbs and early yield vegetables; grab a lounge chair, a refreshment and relax amongst the beauty you worked to create!
