A few tips for your garden this holiday season:
- Plants love snow-cover. It acts as an insulating barrier which decreases temperature fluctuations, allowing your plant to remain warm and snug all winter.
- Tie up your upright evergreens such as Juniper, Cedar and Columnar Spruce to reduce breakage caused by heavy snow. Use jute string or netting as opposed to burlap - this will give strength to the plant, but also allow for air circulation.
- Use tree guards on young trees to protect them from rabbits and mice. In winters with lots of snow fall, (as this one looks to be!) a shortage of food for such critters is common as their primary feeding sources are buried and unattainable. This may cause problematic gnawing at your trees and shrubs. Rabbits and mice are most attracted to fruit trees: Apple, Cherry, Pear, Plum as well as Crabapple, Chokecherry and Serviceberry. If your tree's bark is eaten in a strip all the way around the trunk, the tree will not survive as the vessels that bring water from the root system up into the branches is interrupted. Take the proper precautions to safeguard the pillars of your landscape!
