Summer is fast-approaching meaning the real heat is around the corner. We are all trying to fill our containers with colour to enhance our living space. A couple of key reminders will help you pick the right annuals for your setting. Exposure is the most important factor in successful annual plantings. There are many flowers that cannot take the hot sun and others that need lots to produce an abundance of colour. For a shady location think of: New Guinea Impatients, Begonias, Fuchsia, and Coleus. For areas in full sun plants such as Million Bells, Wave Petunias, Marigolds, Rudbeckia, and Bacopa will get you started. If you missed Joan's seminar on how to "Make Your Pots Pop" remember that filling the whole pot full of soil is not necessary. Use the Styrofoam from annual flats and break them up into the bottom third of the pot. Make sure there is a drainage hole in the bottom of the pot and then fill the rest of the container with potting soil. Potting soil contains vermiculite and perlite which helps retain the water. It is crucial to the longevity of your annuals to use the proper medium in your pots. The rest is up to you - hundreds of options await you at the nursery! Whatever plants you choose, make sure to keep them well watered and fertilized for optimum results.
