Patriot Hostas on special!

It looks like the weather we've been waiting for is finally on its way (but shhh! don't want to scare it away!) But since it feels like we've all been living in perma-shade for the last week or so, we'd like to introduce our shade-themed specials for this week. All specials are for the week of June 1-7, 2009 only. While quantities last.

'Patriot' Hosta - a gorgeous shade perennial with deep green leaves and ivory edges. Regular price $13.99, now $6.88.

Green Gem Boxwood - delicately textured foliage and a perfectly rounded shape. Regular price $32.99, now $22.99 (sale extended from last week)

There are many other options to liven up those darker areas of your landscape, but for best results, the most important thing you can do is know what type of shade you have! "Shade" as an all-encompassing term is very vague and sometimes leaves gardeners feeling limited in terms of plant selection. But there are many different types of shade that will accomodate many different types of plants. For example, 'Deep Shade' refers to areas that are under the canopy of dense trees or overhangs. These areas rarely receive direct light and are almost always in the dark. This will be the most difficult type of shade to plant within. Then "Open Shade" refers to areas that receive no direct sun, but are in bright, open light. Here you will have a wide range of planting options. Finally, "Partial Shade" or "Filtered Shade" both receive some direct sun, but for limited periods of time. Again, here the planting possibilities are fairly large.

To amp up the brightness in your shaded areas, use annuals such as Tuberous Begonias, or New Guinea Impatiens for all season colour, perennials like Astilbe, or shrubs like Azalea (in bloom right now at the nursery!), to name a few.

So stop by and check out all the wonderful options for your shaded areas. Enjoy experimenting with colour, texture, shape and size. Our knowledgeable staff is always available to help you find that perfect plant! Don't forget to sign up for our customer appreciation program (CAP Email Newsletter) to receive timely tips and updates right to your inbox.

Enjoy the weather, whatever it may bring, and keep doing your part to stay Green for Life!
